The “un-fun” part of financial planning takes care of your loved ones the most.

Life insurance is the single most overlooked piece of Veteran’s financial plans.

Why? Veterans are satisfied with their Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance while on active duty. There is an assumption that the Veterans’ Group Life Insurance option available to Veterans once out of uniform is just as good an option.

Not so fast. The devil is in the details. Most civilians know that life insurance is a product best bought earlier in life for a reduced cost over time. Veterans fail to maximize long-term savings due to receiving SGLI as part of service.

Here is the rub for Veterans. VGLI increases in cost every five years. For Veterans in good health, civilian life insurance policies that seem more expensive now may not be in the future. In fact, the cost difference we have seen for those carrying VGLI instead of civilian term life insurance policy into their 60s is a net loss of tens of thousands of dollars. 1
